Good Day,

We are aware of the issue experienced on some our MFN clients.

We had to urgently migrate our MFN traffic to a switch capable of  10 times the current capacity.

Because of the rapid growth, This change needed to occur sooner than planned to prevent prolonged outage. This is to address some of the packet loss issues some clients would have experienced.

The migration will be finalized during the course of this week to allow for continued quality internet experience.

During this exercise you will experience intermittent connection.

The DFA technicians need to replace the current temporary cables by hand hole:BH070017-BH070018 route:NB55P05_cable1 & G30P41_cable1-3, Aggr1-2. The infrastructure is currently at risk.
The cable had been previously damaged within the length. The DFA teams conducted temporary repairs during the break to restore services. The DFA teams will generate permanent repairs to create network and infrastructure stability.

Good day,

WACS (West Africa Cable System) and SAT3 international links are reported to be down at the moment. WACS (West Africa Cable System) and SAT3 international links are reported to be down at the moment. Majority of ISPs are affected by this confirmed cable break.

WACS is a submarine cable which links South Africa with the United Kingdom. It has 14 landing points – 12 along the western coast of Africa and two in Europe.

The SAT3 cable links South Africa to Portugal and Spain, and also includes landing points at several West African countries.

It is not yet clear when the cable outages will be resolved and international Internet speeds will be returned to normal.

During this lockdown period, we are aware that most users are confined to their homes and internet connectivity is critical for keeping in touch and also working from home.  Internet utilisation is at peak volumes in South Africa during this time.

It’s unfortunate that during this critical time, we have been hit by both international cable breaks and local cable breaks which have affected the performance of the network.

We are aware that most clients are facing some speeds issues as we have had to reroute traffic to cater for the cable breaks.

Below are some new reports of the cable breaks:

Some service have also experienced peak usages and outages due to the online volumes at this time when everyone is home. You can verify status of the service you are trying to access on down detector https://downdetector.co.za/  or by checking on the internet if other users may be experiencing similar issues to your therefore see if there are issues on the service server side.

Speedtest servers are also being congested as a lot of users are verifying speeds due to these issues occurring and therefore will occasionally give contradicting results from server to server. We recommend you try a few including https://speedtest.co.za and https://accelerit.speedtestcustom.com should there be a need to check your speeds.

All of these international and local factors combined including the usage profiles may have an impact on your speeds from time to time.  In most instances however our users are generally unaffected however we have noticed our redundant routes taking on a bit of strain in this period. 

Technicians are currently tending the major breaks and feedback from WACS is that a repair ship is in transit to the cable break and an estimated time of repair (ETR) is the 4th of April 2020, subject to prevailing weather conditions.

It is a frustrating time for everyone in the country and the world and we ask for your patience as we work to resolve these issues.

Slow Internet speeds in South Africa – WACS cable break (Resolved) Critical

We are aware of the current speed issues experienced.

 The WAC cable break (As you would have read on the news hhttps://mybroadband.co.za/news/fibre/345319-slow-internet-speeds-in-south-africa-wacs-cable-break.html has affected connectivity to services which are not hosted locally and we have also faced issues where some core fibres have been damaged on certain FNOs which has put strain on alternate routes. 

There has also been additional load during this lock down period putting additional load on routes. We are working hard with our partners to reroute where we can and stabilize connectivity.

 WACS has advised that a repair ship is in transit to the cable break and an estimated time of repair (ETR) is the 4th April 2020, subject to prevailing weather conditions. Please be patient while we work to get back to the quality connectivity you are used to.
